Week 4

Pictures of the week

Walked from school to Somerset, realize that there's alot of weirdly shaped architecture around but its well, its creative! Its beautiful with the blue sky as the background, i love taking picture of architectures because its alot of effort and takes alot of people to build it. From a general idea to developing and building it, and it always ALWAYS amaze me by how its build by human and of course the help of machine which is also build by human!! Also, saw two girls who dress exactly the same and i find it so cute they are probably family or best friends. Most women fears to be in same clothes nowadays, not going to deny that i am one of them but honestly what's there to be embarrass about that just mean you both have the same fashion sense or well, Singapore is so small and we only have those few places we can actually shop at which is why i want to take up fashion so i will be able to make my own clothes and express my own style.

Ted Talk

Speaker Tony Fadell talks about The Secret Of Design is.......Noticing. As a product designer himself, it's his job to notice everyday things, feeling it and trying to improve it. He use fruit as an example, how it used to not have the sticker on it untill someone had a bright idea and added it on there so its easier for us to check out at the grocery counter. But the problem was, we have to look for the sticker to peel off before consuming unlike before, we could just take it and eat it right away. He talk about how our brain encode the everyday things we do into habits so we can free up space to learn new things. It's a process called habituation and it's one of the most basic ways, as humans, we learn. So if we focus on those tiny details, the ones we may not see and we look at them as we say, "Are those important or is that the way we've always done it? Maybe there's a way to get rid of those." His last piece of advice is to think younger, because kids haven't lived long enough to experience the world like us. Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is when he or she grows up, is how to remain an artist. Its not easy pushing back to one of the basic way we make sense of the world. But if we can, we are able to come up with pretty amazing things for example one day we could get rid of the sticker on the fruit.

Week 3

Pictures of the week

This week i went to Chinatown, is not a place i'll usually go on a regular day. I mostly visit it during Chinese New Year time with my family for Dim Sum and to feel the atmosphere when its crowded with people and Chinese New Year goods. This time its different, not only i'm alone it was pretty empty. There was this shop selling lanterns which i used to play with every lantern festival downstairs with neighbourhood friends and we would have a competition on who has the coolest lantern that year, and it made me miss being young so much because now lantern festival is just another regular day. I also get to see how the shop are on a regular day and not the glam up for Chinese New Year atmosphere, some shop hasn't been renovated since 1950's and i hope it stay that way so the future generation can see how the past was.

See Think Wonder

We did a group project on See, Think and Wonder on Light Bulb,  we had so much idea on See after we listed it all out we proceed to writing down on the paper and from there ideas kept flowing it was really fun and amazing to see how light bulb can lead to so many other things.

Ted Talk

Where good ideas come from? Steven the one who gave the speech took a picture of the Grand Cafe in Oxford, which turn out to be the first coffee house in England in the 1650. He talk about how coffeehouse play such a big role in the birth of Enlightenment because of what they were drinking back then. Before the spread of coffee and tea, people drank  alittle alcohol and wine for beakfast, lunch and dinner it says to help have better idea through out the day. There was this man called Timothy Prestero who has a company called Design That Matters. Timothy and his team decide to  see what are the resourcesin these developing world world contexts and notice they dont have a lot of DVRs or alot of mirowaves but they seem to do a good job on keeping their cars on the road. They start to think that they could build a neonatal incubator out of automobile parts. We take ideas from others and people who we learn from and stitch it into something new, thats when innovation happens.

Week 2

Pictures of the week

looks like a dome from downstairs

leaves peaking thru the metal steps

a workshop, retail store, bistro

the sun was so strong, the view was beautiful

Went around Rochester as I have never been to, upon reaching i was lost at the MRT station and feeling like a tourist I found my way out to Rochester Mall. As i live in Tampines everything around here is so different it's filled with greenery and high rise buildings. i then walk to Rochester Park, which are the photos above and it is mainly cafes and bar which are really unique looking. I then went back to Rochester Mall and sat down at pie and coffee cafe for lunch. I notice how the lifestyle here is so different from people at Tampines, it's much quieter and peaceful compared to the endless busy crowd at Tampines. Whenever i have "me time" i visit the same places. Today i realize how exciting it is to be in a different atmosphere alone. It made me realize that atmosphere, company do affect one's mood. There are alot of people who are afraid to do stuff/being alone but i feel that being comfortable with being alone is so important because at the end of day, you only have yourself.

Egg Drop Challenge

One survive the drop whereas the extra one didnt :(

we first cut the inner triangle smaller and taping it into a pyramid.

then attach 2 straws to make it into a 6 long straws and then tape it to the pyramid which will help it to "stand" therefor protect the egg that will be placed inside the pyramid.

SURVIVED THE DROP!!!!!!

The overall experience was really fun, working as a team to protect our precious egg!
one of the teammate first suggested this and as we go along each one start to pour out ideas, after we were done with the pyramid and the other side. i then suggested to make a base at the bottom for the egg as we were afraid that the egg might fall off the hole. Its was really nice seeing everyone's idea coming as one and made it!

Ted Talk
Creativity grow out of everyday experience, heartbreak, loss of something, after a war or something terrible. Some artist most powerful work come out of their most difficult times. Everyone goes through hard time, but its about making use of it when its over. For example a glued broken piece of glass, that means there was history to it. Nothing is perfect but its about how you see it.

Week 1

Pictures of the week

Saw this incredible sunset while i was jogging from east coast park to marina bay sands, sunset never fail to amuse me by the different hue each time.

Water fountain are so fascinating to me, how the water splashes up and to the ground and the calming noise it makes. (Stadium)

How pretty is this bench at Gardens By The Bay, its truly amazing how people are able to make something so magical real life.

How cute is it to have a traditional swing right infront of your doorstep, this is so creative rather than having the usual four seater swing most estate uses. (Emerald Hill Road)

Earth but i also see a rabbit and a cat which also seem like a dinosaur at the centre of the picture. (Marina Bay Sands)

As I was jogging many other people were passing by me, i look them and wonder what each were thinking. And i gets me thinking that everyone has different thoughts and idea and that the world is made out of all of us. Without humans there isnt this world, theres no buildings, no movement, no creation. Each and everyone have their own ideas, some might think similar but there's no exact ones.

Ted Talk

Tales of creativity, the video is about being creative and playful. As we all grow older we tend to be more reserved with our thoughts and idea on things. I remember as a kid i love creating and showing off my art work to everyone and anyone who wants to see them now, i have trouble appreciating my own work and voicing out ideas. After watching this talk I have decided to be more open minded and that the child in me is still there urging be creative, playful and expressive. In design there's no right nor wrong it's about how one feel about it. Role playing also helps designers to understand better with coming out with a suitable design as they experience how it's going to feel while gaining more ideas from others. Overall, i am inspired to be more playful with my ideas and creativity.
